Studio PolicySTUDIO POLICIES
Please read the following carefully BEFORE we begin lessons. Your tuition payment signifies that you have read the policies set forth below, and that you are in agreement with them. Please feel free to ask questions regarding these policies.
*Students should not be enrolled with, or studying with another teacher while enrolled in Cello Leap Studio.
* Students must complete a registration form and pay a one month tuition deposit in addition to their regular first months tuition in order to hold a spot for the Fall semester. This deposit will be credited toward the last month's tuition (in most cases the month of May). In the event that the student discontinues lessons at any time during the school year, the deposit will be forfeited.
*Students must complete a registration form and pay a one month deposit, prior to the start of lessons. If lessons are ongoing, this deposit must be paid during the summer in order to reserve your time for the fall semester, and will be credited toward spring semester's LAST month of tuition, in most cases this will be May. Lessons begun during the school year will also be subject to a deposit. In the event that the student discontinues lessons at any time during the school year, their deposit will be forfeited.
*Students should arrive on time preferably at least five minutes prior to the start of the lesson, with all the necessary materials, including music, practice notebook, sheets or log, and cello supplies, including their chair or stool, if applicable. Parents or students under 12 MUST be present at all lessons and Group Classes. Group lessons will be more interactive going forward, with parental participation.
*Students should make their arrival known. Because my waiting room does not adjoin the studio, please come to the door of the studio so that I know you are here. This will help me to stay ON TIME!
* Parents and students are asked to PLEASE turn off cell phones and other electronic devices that make noise (iPads, etc.) during lessons, and refrain from texting and checking email as your participation and availability to take notes is crucial to your students success. Parents ARE invited to use their phones to video tape segments of the lesson, or take photos of technical points to be learned.
*Fingernails must be kept short. If they are not trimmed at home, I will ask you to clip them in the studio. There are no exceptions to this policy, as long nails impede the development of technique.
* Group lessons, recitals, and performance classes are MANDATORY. Failure to attend may result in termination of lessons. Students are strongly encouraged to also take part in studio sponsored and area workshops. Preference in scheduling, and my level of commitment to the student will be based on participation in these extra events.
*Students must obtain an approved instrument and bow, either through rental or purchase from a reputable dealer.
*Parents are expected to attend group classes as valuable involved audience members. Motivation is largely a function of parental involvement!
It should be clear to everyone that consistent attendance at lessons will foster progress, successfully motivating students to practice, and resulting in a more enjoyable experience for all.
Students are responsible for contacting the teacher 24 hours in advance of a scheduled lesson if they are going to be absent, except in the case of acute and sudden illness. If the student becomes ill the day of the lesson, they should first attempt to swap lessons with another student. If that is not possible, a makeup lesson will be given for ONE absence only per semester. PLEASE do not come with a fever! (100 Degrees F.)
If I must cancel a lesson, the lesson will be made up at a later, at a mutually agreed upon date. I generally give one week of makeup lessons per semester if they are owed. There are absolutely no refunds fs missed because of students scheduling conflicts or other instances that prevent the student from fulfilling his/her obligation and commitment to lessons.
In the event of inclement weather, please call by noon of the day in question. Often a morning snow in Tennessee has melted by the
after noon. I will hold lessons if roads are clear and safe, regardless of whether or not schools are closed.
Dr. Suzuki has famously been quoted as saying: “Practice only on the days you eat”. Just as we must take in a balanced diet of healthy foods to maintain our well being, we must nourish our abilities by maintaining a consistent and well-balanced practice regimen. Daily practice is the most important component of successful and rewarding musical study. It is a life-long journey through which the student gains knowledge, self-discipline, and an appreciation of what it takes to succeed in all areas of life.
Students will learn what constitutes good practice in their lessons. It is the responsibility of the parent to enforce and guide these skills and habits at home. Teen aged and adult students will have to evaluate their own practice habits and adjust their schedules to accommodate the need for consistent practice. There will be constant discussion about practice, and consistent evaluation of how it is proceeding at home.
There are MANY tools for helping you in your evaluation of practice quality. Generally, it is better to practice a little on very busy days than to skip it altogether. Short practice of scales and technical exercises can be helpful in maintaining skills when lengthy practice is not possible.
Young students (pre-school through second grade) should practice from twenty to thirty minutes per day. Practice may be broken up into five to ten minute segments if that is easier for the child, but DO be consistent about getting the cello out, and perhaps even playing it yourself if you encounter resistance. If your young child refuses to practice, realize that he/she is testing you, and you must “win” the battle by doing the practice yourself and NOT engaging the negative behavior. The important message here is that the cello practice is a part of the day, just as eating, brushing teeth, and getting dressed in the morning. I have many helpful resources for helping the practice happen, but you must see to it that YOU make the practice happen.
Older students, from third grade on, should plan to practice for a time period equal to that of their lesson length. Again these may be broken . Again these may be broken into shorter time segments for younger students, or those with attention challenges.
High School students should be practicing for at least forty-five minutes to an hour or more per day. If, on a given day you are loaded with homework and this proves impossible, remember that a short practice as outlined above is better than no practice.
Repertoire Classes, Workshops, and Institutes
These activities, particularly REPERTOIRE or “GROUP” LESSONS, are the cornerstone of the Suzuki method, and are a large part of what sets it apart form “traditional” music education methods. They are a lesson! Because you are studying in a SUZUKI studio, you are required to attend these lessons. Group lessons are included in the cost of your tuition.
Workshops are also an essential part of your child’s musical education. They are generally highly motivational and inspiring. There are a number of workshops held throughout the region, including those in North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee.
Institutes are summer camps for the whole family, often sponsored by the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and take place throughout the United States and Canada. A complete listing is available through the SAA, and in my studio usually at the end of January. There is no substitute for this experience. It is the single greatest motivational tool I have ever encountered, and worth the investment of time and money. Institutes provide an opportunity to get away from the demands of every day life and focus your attention on your love of music with your children and other like-minded families. There are Institutes to fit every budget and vacation schedule throughout the summer. I strongly recommend setting a portion of the family budget aside to attend yearly, from early book one on.
